A Guide to
Costa Azahar
Peniscola
The most well known town on the Costa del Azahar is
Peniscola. This
old, walled, medieval town is situated on a small peninsular
and features a beautiful old castle and a maze of narrow,
cobbled streets filled with attractive shops and
restaurants. It has a thriving tourist industry and the
fine, golden, sandy beaches are both safe and clean.
Each afternoon at the working fishing port, a fish auction
is held where much of the fish is bought by local hotels and
restaurants.
The hills above Peniscola overlook an unspoiled coastline of
small bays and are particularly good for hiking and
walking.
Vinaros
This is the northernmost resort with a pleasant seafront
promenade, marina and harbour. The town still has a working
fishing fleet and is famous for the quality of its seafood,
especially king prawns.
The area is predominately Spanish, attracting visitors from
inland cities especially in August, when most Spaniards are on
holiday. The whole town takes part in the Vinaros
carnival held in February, dressing up in stunning
costumes.
Oropesa
Oropesa is one of the most developed resorts and divided
into two main areas.
The old town features a beautiful castle and in 1379, its
walls were fortified to withstand attacks by pirates and two
16th century watch towers still stand on the coast. The
old town features art galleries and many shops dealing in
antiques and medieval artefacts. There are also the usual
fiestas and processions in this lovely town together with a
variety of bars and restaurants
The beach area boasts several fine beaches in particular
Morro de Gos offering many water sports and the still
waters of La Cocha ( the shell ) and all of them have a
reputation for being both safe and clean.
The modern yacht harbour offers full marina facilities and
water sports activities and the town holds many fiestas and
concerts throughout the year.
